The island of Mal di Ventre is located a few miles from the coast of the province of Oristano in Sardinia. In the nineteenth century, Alberto La Marmora, in "Journey in Sardinia" described its natural beauty that is still visible nowadays. The name probably derives from the difficult navigation that takes place in its waters, once one of the 
most solitary of Sardinia's west coast. Located opposite the Sinis Peninsula, the island of Mal di Ventre covers a surface of 80 hectares, now protected by the Institutions, which has qualified it as marine protected area.Part of the protected area are also the small Catalan rock, and the surrounding sea. The island is a flat granite area whose maximum height is 18 meters, which are reached in the lighthouse area that dominates the island. Its geology is very interesting: it is dissimilar from the nearby coast of Sinis confirming an origin dating back to ancient geological era. It is covered by arid steppes sometimes interrupted by zones of Mediterranean scrub with cistus, mastic and rosemary and dwarf palms. The island is now home to numerous examples of wild rabbit but, according to what is written by La Marmora, once probably it was possible also to spot the monk seals. The western coastline has rugged granite cliffs, while the eastern side is surrounded by beautiful beaches. The island is also frequented by numerous migratory birds nesting cormorants, the major and minor puffins, herring gulls, gulls, and Hawks.
