Oristano

Oristano (Aristanis in Sardinian language) is capital of the province, in the central-west of Sardinia.

It is located in the northern lowland of Campidano, in the region called Campidano of Oristano. Established as provincial capital on July 16, 1974, it has a long history, particularly related to the Giudicato (judiciary) of Arborea and the figure of Eleonor of Arborea. The Gulf, roughly oval in shape, is closed between Capo Frasca in the south and Capo San Marco in the north.

The Antiquarium Arborense is the most important museum of Oristano. This preserves mainly archaeological finds from nuraghis of the area and the city of Tharros. It also houses important artisanal Spanish works of the XV-XVI century.

The most important event is the Sartiglia, an equestrian tournament of medieval legacy left from the Catalan domination, which is held on the last Sunday and the last Tuesday of Carnival. It is organized by the two oldest guilds of Oristano: The Guild of the peasants, which runs on Sunday and the Guild of carpenters that runs on Tuesday. The head of the race "su Componidori", accompanied by the second "su Secundu," the third "su Terzu Cumpoi" and a number of riders.

40 groups of riders (each made of three riders, for a total of 120) chosen through accurate selections, participate in the Sartiglia.

A few kilometres from the town of Oristano, are located some of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia: Is Arutas, San Giovanni di Sinis, the island of Mal di Ventre, Putzu Idu, Sa Mesa Longa and S'Archittu.
